por’nog’ra’phy (noun)

1. sexually explicit material

films, magazines, writings, photographs, or other materials that are sexually explicit and intended to cause sexual arousal

Though one could argue that our modern definition of pornography involves tangible images of sexual activity and probably began with the invention of the camera in the late 1830s, the fact is that pornographic thought and expression have existed since men (and women!) first walked the Earth, and each generation reconsiders and redefines what is pornographic. While many have analogized Adam and Eve’s “minor indiscretion” as Eve picking an apple off the tree, their real weakness was the temptation of the flesh. Nudity abounds in some of the world’s best-known historic religious paintings dating back hundreds of years. Many people considered William Shakespeare’s classic plays, such as Romeo and Juliet, profane and explicit in their time, and others described famous novels of the 18th and 19th Centuries as unseemly and sinful in theirs. Early films of the 1920s and 1930s contained enough sexually provocative material to force the film industry to censor and eventually rate films. Many believed that pictures of women in dressed in lingerie—pictures published in almost all women’s clothes catalog today—were pornographic as recently as the 1950s.

It is clear that porn and sexually suggestive stories and images are as old as our history, and these stories and images evolve as technology evolves. Today’s technology—including the video player, Internet, and webcam—has led to the most uninhibited expression of our sexual desires and to the modern porn video industry. Today, with the click of a mouse, we can view hot videos and live webcam shows—things that would no doubt shock generations past, but most may accept as mainstream in the future.
